April 1st Update: jetBook Color

It's time!!!!!

If you haven't received the April 1st update we'll be posting it on our site (www.jetbook.net/update) within the next 2 days.

Giving you a sneak peak, this month's update features:

·         Graphical interface performance has been increased. Now it takes less time to run your commands.
·         Page turning speed has been increased. Now you can flip through ebooks faster, because the program performs caching of preceding and subsequent pages relative to the page you are reading.
·         Web browser has been implemented to display Web resources related to ebook reading using open networks. This has been limited as per school requests, but can be modified in future updates.
        ·         New - 9 workbook templates for onscreen drawing: various chart papers and lined papers.
·         You can use the text-to-speech engine to get the device to read a desired book aloud starting from the page you are viewing. It speaks the text clearly, with no stammer.
·         Hardware keys are working on a fly now – with reduced response time.
·         Speech recognition accuracy has been improved, so the ECTACO® jetBook® COLOR has become even more responsive.
·         Several interface languages has been added including: Chinese, Czech, French, Italian, Korean, Polish, and Portuguese along the already implemented English, Japanese, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, and German.
·         FlashCards have become more flexible: you can create your personal sets of entries copied from the Talking Dictionary section.

Thanks for all the advice and requests!!!

Keep sending them to Greg Stetson at greg@ectaco.com and we'll all work to get them implemented.

10 days... Well if update will be good than ok. I can wait some more. In my opinion most important, better zoom, zoomlock, horizontal pdf and opening cbr/cbz files (comic books formats).

Greg from ectaco tell us they need the download capacity for the schools, in the same time Jerry says he found some issues and it will be available soon. Looks for me as if its vaporware. I think I will give them a 1 week timeframe to provide me with the bought webbrowser (I just tell them it is a fault in the software and they have 1 week to fix it), after that I will return it.

"If you haven't received the April 1st update we'll be posting it on our site (www.jetbook.net/update) within the next 2 days"

What do you mean guys with "within the next 2 days"????????

  13. He meant the next 20 days. He forgot a 0. Relax people. A month or two isn't going to make a huge difference. Have some patience. I bought the device based on current features and its potential. As long as they keep updating the device and making it better each time out I'm willing to stick with it.

They've got another one planned in May so I'm willing to wait for that one too.

    "He forgot a 0", that's rich :D...
    Maybe he forgot two zeros...

Greg from Ectaco informed me the update "shall be (for sure) released next week".

@Anonymous from April 20th -- actually he did say that today is the estimated day for the schools to complete the downloads, and once they're done, we can have it.

  19. Anonymous4/27/2012

Greg from Ectaco told me that they are going to delay the April release and just release two updates together in the end of May.

Makes sense really since schools are their primary customers.

Did you say end of May so what's happened to The 1st of May update plus 1st of April ???

  20. Anonymous4/27/2012

No, actually, doesn't make any sense at all. They already have the update ready and packaged if they deployed it to schools. It doesn't take any effort to just put it up for download.

At least, they should inform us since they promised the April update...

  22. They need to post some official info

    1. Anonymous4/30/2012

No. I don't want official info. I would much rather find out information from Anonymous users who say stuff like "Greg from Ectaco told me that I deserve to wait since I bought a Jetbook Color instead of buying an Amazon DX".

Jerry from Ectaco told me that if you guys don't stop complaining about getting your updates on time, that they will simply stop telling you when the updates will come. And they might even stop providing updates to the Jetbook Color.

So be quiet guys. Be very very quiet. We should be grateful that they are even thinking of upgrading an old device like the Jetbook Color. We should thank Ectaco for trying to keep us in the loop about updates. But because of a few rotten apples, we may never get updates on this blog again.

Way to go rotten apples. I hope y'all are happy.

Why should I be quiet? I bought a device with browser (it is part of the product description!). As long as they don't deliver what they sell they have to fix or I will return it because they lied in the product description.

You can't return it. Just try them. And replace it with what? Yeah, that's right. Shut your mouth.

I have nothing nice to say about Jerry or about Greg or about Ectaco or the Jetbook Color. So I am not going to say anything at all.

However, I was promised an update in April, today its the 30th of April and still no update. I am very disappointed with the whole purchase.

I dont understand what ppl are complaining about. What do you need an update for when the system is already stable for reading - and not to mention in color without the backlight. I like the horizontal pan reading idea but that was never promised and not so necessary.

A browser? Really? you want a browser on an e ink device? thats just ridiculous

Be realistic, there's nothing out there available where i can store my documents on the go and and even make notes and drawings on. I'm totally satisfied the way it is, but the speed update is something that i would be interested in.

I'm also really disappointed with the purchase! They don't deliver, what the promise on their product website. And they promised an update on the first of april, but there is no update! And if I compare the jetbook color with the Onyx Boox M92, the software of JBC is just JUNK! (I^m thinking of giving back the JBC...)

there is finally a new update on the site!

but at least in the new features list I don't see any browser.

  29. In my device info, platform revision is 43.35.509, so I guess it has OS version 43, right? I have downloaded the jbcupdate.bin which is for verions 43 and above and followed the procedure stated at the website. I have done it previously, so I know I'm not doing anything wrong. However, no updating!!! Is it a bug? It shows the progress bar for 2-3 seconds and then the device boots with the previous version. Help please!!!

    1. I thought the same thing (w. revision 43.37.509), but the device did get noticeably faster after it restarted... still showing the last version in device info though. I suspect that it did update the OS... I'll try to update the firmware and see how that goes.

    2. So the firmware update did go through (it did take a while, as was expected -- at first I was worried it might be stuck at the "checking integrity" stage), now I have a jbc w/ platform rev. 43.37.509 and firmware r1302... (I'm assuming the OS update should have updated to 49.something based on the file names). Everything listed in the update works as far as I can tell, and the speed improvement is there.

Act at your own risk, YMMV.
